How to legalize unpermitted work
Legalizing unpermitted work means getting a permit for work that is already done (often called an after-the-fact, as-built or retroactive permit), then passing inspections. Inspectors may ask you to open walls or ceilings so they can see framing, wiring and plumbing, and anything that does not meet the code has to be corrected.

The usual steps
- Find out what was permitted: search the city’s permit records for the address.
- Contact the building department and describe the work; ask which permits and drawings it needs.
- Apply for the permit, paying any investigation fee or higher fee the city charges for work started without a permit.
- Open up work for inspection where the inspector asks, and correct anything that fails.
- Pass the final inspection so the permit is closed in the city’s records.
