Building codes by state
Which residential code applies in each state, and since when.
A building code sets how a house must be built: structure, fire safety, stairs, egress windows, electrical, plumbing and energy. Most states and cities adopt the model codes published by the International Code Council and the NFPA, often with their own amendments, and enforce them through permits and inspections.
Some states adopt one code for everywhere; others set a minimum and let cities go further; a few leave adoption to cities and counties. The table shows the residential code each state has adopted, with its effective date, from the state agency, register or statute.
