Unpermitted work: what it means and what to do
Unpermitted work is construction that needed a permit and did not get one, or that never passed its final inspection. It matters in three ways: the city can enforce against it, it can complicate a sale or refinancing, and an insurer or buyer may treat it as a risk because nobody inspected it.

How to find out if work was permitted
Search the city’s permit records for the address and compare the permits and final inspections with what is on the property. See the permit lookup guide for each city’s search.
