Mechanical permits
Permits for heating, cooling, ventilation and gas appliances.
A mechanical permit covers heating, ventilation and air-conditioning work: furnaces, air conditioners, heat pumps, ductwork, exhaust fans and gas appliances. In many cities it also covers water heaters, or they fall under the plumbing permit. Replacing equipment usually needs one even when nothing structural changes, because of the gas, venting, electrical and refrigerant connections.
