Pool barrier requirements
Pool barrier rules are set by the local code. These are the barrier rules in the city records we verified, in each city’s words.
On this page
A pool barrier (fence, wall or other enclosure) keeps young children away from water. Codes set a minimum height, limit gaps and climbable footholds, and require self-closing, self-latching gates; a house wall used as part of the barrier needs alarms or other protection on doors.
Cities usually require a permit for any pool barrier work, including replacing a barrier, even when a similar fence elsewhere on the lot would be exempt.
