Do you need a permit for a fence in Columbus?
It depends on the project. Columbus exempts some fences from a building permit and requires one for the rest1; the exemption's limit is 6 feet, with the conditions in the city's wording below.

Limits and conditions in Columbus's rule
Each limit sits next to the sentence it comes from; the conditions in that sentence are part of the rule.
| Rule | Value | The city’s wording |
|---|---|---|
| Exempt up to this height | 6 feet | A fence 6 feet or less in height does not require a building permit, but the Zoning Code regulates the placement of fences even if they are less than 6 feet tall under certain circumstances related to safe visibility for motor vehicle operation.1 |
| Exempt height under the state code | 6 feet | 2. Fences not over 6 feet high.2 |
Zoning rules: separate from the building permit
A project can be exempt from one and still need the other (zoning vs building permits).
| Zoning rule | Value | The city’s wording |
|---|---|---|
| Maximum height in side and rear yards | 6 ft or less: not regulated as a structure, rear yard with no setback | Fences 6 feet or less in height are not regulated as a structure and can be placed in the rear yard with no setback from the property lines.1 |
| Side and rear setback | Fences over 6 ft are subject to setbacks including side yards | Privacy fences over 6 feet in height are regulated as a structure and are subject to setback requirements, including side yards.1 |
| Front yard: openness | 2.5 feet | No portion of a fence or wall exceeding two and one-half feet in height above the finished lot grade shall exceed 25 percent opacity when located in a required yard having vehicular access to a street or abutting such access.1 |
| Front yard: who to ask | Call Zoning before any front-yard fence | Call the Zoning Office, 645-8637, if considering any type of fence in the front yard.1 |
| Corner lots | Corner lots: height, location and opacity regulated | The Zoning Code regulates the height, location, and opacity of fences on corner lots.1 |
| Zoning approval needed even without a building permit? | Zoning rules apply to fences ≤6 ft; over-the-counter review encouraged, no appointment | Fence review is done “over the counter”. No appointment is necessary.1 |
